All Things Telecom 2011

Posted on December 13, 2011

As Christmas is fast approaching everyone’s minds are set on the holiday season and 2012!

At this time ITP believes its prudent to highlight the major telecom events of 2011 in this edition of our blog, “All Things Telecom 2011!”
- Passing of telecom icon, innovator and the greatest influence on the industry in our era; Steve Jobs ( February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011). Mr. Jobs was the co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc. and was responsible for key inventions such as the IPAD, IPOD, and IPHONE. He will, undoubtably, leave a lasting impression on the industry for the foreseeable future.

- Blackberry Messenger (BBM) outage - Spanning three days and leaving millions of their faithful consumers frustrated, Blackberry resolved its messenger outage on October 13th, 2011. Before this Blackberry was already loosing market share to other key smart phones on the market, most notably Apple’s IPHONE and Android. This outage might have put the final nail in the coffin for Research In Motion (RIM) and their Blackberry Smart Phone dominance.

- Avaya gains market share on Cisco - Avaya through its resellers like ITP, were able to gain considerable market share on Cisco enterprises. The new year looks even more promising for the telecommunication manufacturer.

- VOIP (Voice – Over Internet Protocol) emerges into the Canadian Marketplace for both residential and commercial use. The industry trend is towards the gradual conversion from Analog/copper lines to Fibernetics/IP services.

- Lastly, unfortunately ITP has also witnessed an increase of telephone system or PBX fraud. That is “Hackers” by passing system security in an effort to accumulate thousands of dollars in International Long Distance Calls. To see how to protect your phone system please visit http://www.inttelprod.com/PDF/Fraud%20Calls.pdf. Don’t let this happen to your company, no one wins!

Have a safe and Happy Holiday Season and a prosperous and healthy 2012!

Tis’ the Season to be Jolly…

Posted on November 14, 2011 by inttelprod

As Christmas is fast approaching and so is the end of the year a lot of companies are wrapping up their yearly budgets and considering next years purchases while deciding on what’s imperative to buy now before yet another year is closed off.

Its always great to break in the new year in style, and what better way to do this for a company than to update/replace their telecommunications equipment. Now i’m not saying this because we operate a telecom company, or am I? No really, is there anything worst than having outdated telephone equipment? Does your company still operate using DOS command on the computer? I think the answer to this is a unanimous “no,” than I ask “why would you still be using telecommunications equipment that is 15 years old?”

There is no easier way for a company to say to their clients that they are “for real” than to update their telephone equipment. In an economy that is robust with uncertainty, companies need every efficiency possible in order to compete. You will be surprised how much your office efficiency and productivity can increase by just updating your phone equipment.

Contact us, we have been helping companies, since 1977, become more efficient and productive.

Are we living in a telecom monopoly?

Posted on October 20, 2011 by inttelprod

I might be ranting and raving but it seems that in Ontario we are all (telecom industry) at the mercy of Bell Canada. Wasn’t this the role of CRTC, to eliminate such muscle?

I’ll give you an example to make myself clear- MTS Allstream also provides analog line service in Ontario, own their own infrastructure, yet they can only provide service with in a certain area. Outside of this area only Bell Canada can provide this service. This area is called Resale. Now we all now what happens when there is only one company that can provide a service- its called supply and demand. As supply goes down, price goes up its as simple as that. Its a monoply in this area!

What options do customers have? Many customers, simply put, cannot afford the ridiculous prices that Bell charges for a basic business line nor do they want to put up with the Bell customer service headache. Now you say, “I fall into the Resale domain, I have no choice.” Thankfully, choices are becoming more apparent and its our job as a telephony service provider to make these choices known, exposed and readily available. Considerable time and resources have been spent by telecommunication companies alike to provide this choice.

The choice is IP trunking, or VOIP. By going in  this direction you eliminate the possibility of Bell manipulating or dictating the price at which you will pay.

Contact us Today- we give you the choice!

Replacing your old Nortel Phone System … Better late than never!

Posted on September 19, 2011 by inttelprod

As many of you probably already know, Nortel enterprises became extinct around this time 2 years ago when Avaya communications purchased the company along with all Nortel’s engineers and product patents. ITP are the Avaya experts!

Now what does this mean for the consumer that stares at a dusty Meridian or Norstar phone all day long? Not much… if that consumer is okay with limited product support, increased exposure to fraud calls and a telephone system that makes as much noise and accumulates as much space as a lawn mower.

Over the past 6 months International Telephone Products (ITP), as a business line and long distance service provider, has seen an increase in the number of clientele that have had the misfortune of having their telephone systems hacked and have accumulated thousands of dollars in fraudulent calls. Hackers will try to hack, that’s what they do. That’s beyond our control but what is within our control is to ensure that our client’s phone system is fully protected. ITP understands the susceptibility of the older Nortel systems and the frequency of them being hacked. Why take the risk? Contact us today. Trust a telephone service and systems provider that has been doing it for you since 1977!

What consumers need to know about telecom…!

Posted on September 1, 2011 by inttelprod

We have entered a period where technolgy is changing faster than most (non-tech savvy patrons) are confortable with. I buy an iPhone 4 today and 6 months later the iPhone 5 comes out! What’s up with this?

We live in an economy sparked by competition and essentially “1 up-ing” each other to compete. The old days where a shake of the hand and a look in the eye were enough to solidify a deal are gone. We need to be dynamic and change with the technolgy or fall victim to a society where we are left in the dust.

The business telecommunication sector is no different. The industry has evolved from basic analog lines to the major service providers disregarding this service in search of IP Trunking technology or VOIP. Why? The answer is simple; this is where the cost savings apply, in automation. Just as a self-checkout in a grocery store replaces the job that was formally held by a cashier, VOIP provides the same benefit to those that implement the system: reduced labour.

International Telephone Products LTD has followed this worldwide trend and has been dynamic allowing us to offer our end-users the latest in what telephony has to offer.

Why Should Small Business “Think Big”

Posted on June 14, 2011 by inttelprod

Most businesses are small (over 98% have less than 100 employees) and they like it that way: they value the flexibility, responsiveness and customer interaction. So why did Avaya recently make a major announcement encouraging small businesses to “Think Big?” and why are they hosting a customer event on June 22nd for customers and prospects to find out MORE?….

Well it’s probably not because Avaya thinks small is bad: small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) have helped make Avaya the No.1 provider of business communications systems. More than seven million workers around the world rely on Avaya IP Office, Avaya’s flagship small business solution.

What Avaya was saying is the competitiveness of an organization is now less dependent on its size than ever before. The playing field is not completely level (it never will be) but it’s better than ever before. By making smart use of today’s communications capabilities, small businesses can compete against anyone, anytime, anywhere, any size. If you think it, you can do it. Here are just three reasons why:

Advanced capabilities: Communications solutions for SMEs used to be “stripped down” versions of solutions for enterprises.  Avaya IP Office was designed from the ground up for SMEs and includes support for mobility, presence, video communications and more that used to be available only on solutions for larger enterprises.

Mobility: The mobility and routing capabilities of a solution like Avaya IP Office make it easy to connect people and offices in one, cohesive responsive unit. A small company can hire home-based workers, or open small branch offices, or more effectively connect employees on their mobiles and deliver seamless, customer service as easily as a much bigger company with many more employees.

Scalability: You can grow quite large with today’s “small business” systems. Avaya IP Office handles up to 32 locations and 1,000 users.

One Avaya small business customer recently hit the nail on the head: “We do several million dollars a year,” he said.  “We’d never be able to touch that without the communications that we have here.” (View the video about this business, a veterinary practice outside Cincinnati, as well as other companies.

For all of these reasons, now is the time to start “Thinking Big”—and using communications to get there.  Also, don’t forget to enter our contest.

You've Got the Power

Posted on May 20, 2011 by inttelprod

If you’ve never thought of your communications system as a place to reduce energy consumption, it’s time to start…In fact, start by taking a look at the phone on your desk.

Testing by Avaya and Tolly Consultants agree: "Avaya IP Phones use less energy than the competition."  In head-to-head comparisons, independent tests show that Avaya IP Office phones consume up to 24.5% less energy than competitive phones. If your business uses a lot of phones—a small contact center for example—the savings can add up.

And because the Avaya IP Office solution does not require a dedicated server, energy consumption is cut there as well.

All of this means:

  • Less energy consumed
  • Lower CO2 emissions
  • Lower electricity bills

See the report and see another way to cut your energy usage: click here.

IP Trunking VS. Traditional Analog Lines

Posted on April 20, 2011 by inttelprod

What is an IP Trunk?

An IP Trunk is primarily a concurrent call that is routed over the IP backbone of a carrier using VoIP technology. IP Trunks are used in conjunction with an IP-PBX and are thought of as replacements for traditional PRI or analog circuits. The popularity of IP Trunks is due primarily to the cost savings of IP, along with the increased reliability.

What are the advantages of IP Trunks versus Analog Circuits?

IP Trunks are cheaper than analog circuits while maintaining the same service quality that businesses expect from line quality. In addition, long distance termination charges associated with IP Trunks are much cheaper than traditional analog or TDM rates.

What equipment do I need to be able to use IP Trunking?

IP Trunks can work with a IP-ready PBX. IP Trunks can also be made to work with traditional analog or key systems with an IAD (Integrated Access Device). The IP Trunk service provider will need to interoperate with the underlying equipment manufacturer.

Will I need more Internet bandwidth when I buy IP Trunks?

IP Trunks are virtual circuits delivered over an Internet Access line. Depending on the number of IP Trunks purchased, and the amount of excess Internet connectivity, a business should consider purchasing more Internet Access. However, it’s important to know that when a IP Trunk is not being used, the bandwidth otherwise allocated to a IP Trunk is freed up for use in less intensive applications, such as e-mail and general web use. This dynamic allocation of bandwidth is yet another feature of IP Trunks versus more traditional technologies, such as analog or PRI circuits.

For more information on IP Trunking and why your company can realize its benefits, contact International Telephone Products LTD. and an ITP IP Trunking expert will be glad to assist you!

Small Business Communications:
5 Must Have Features

Posted on April 14, 2011 by inttelprod

Is now the right time to upgrade your office communications solution? If your business is relying on an “older” communications solution, the answer is “yes.” But how old is “older?” Here’s an easy way to tell.  These are five communications features no business should do without… even if you are missing just one, it’s probably time to consider getting a new communications system.

Caller ID: Knowing who is calling before you pick up the phone is a great convenience and essential for sales and customer service. Caller ID has been around for years, so if your current communications can’t support Caller ID, it’s definitely time to make a change. But there’s an extra dimension to this: being able to link to your customer database/CRM solution (such as Salesforce.com). Avaya IP Office can automatically bring up a “screen pop” of information about the caller. The impact of that single feature on sales and customer service can be huge.

One-number Reachability: Most people in business today have more than one “reach” number: office, office mobile, personal mobile, fax, home office, etc.  To stay in touch, employees end up giving out personal numbers, which is never a good idea. A better way is to use your office communications system to manage all your different numbers by providing customers one number (i.e., the office number) and use the intelligence in your office communications system (like Avaya IP Office) to find you.

Conference Calls: Many small businesses get by with rudimentary conference calling on their phone systems (it’s good for  conferencing a few people) and also spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on third-party conference call services when they need more. If that’s you, it’s definitely time to make a change. Avaya IP Office has two conference bridges—each one can support more than sixty people on a call. That means no outside charges for conference calls and calls can be arranged at a moment’s notice.

Communications Anywhere: It used to be that when you had more than one office or business location, you needed a completely separate phone system for each site. Or if someone wanted to work from home, you needed to install a separate line with its own number that had nothing to do with your office communications system. That’s not the case anymore. Avaya IP Office lets you link communications systems in different offices. You can share resources—messaging and a receptionist. If one office is closed, calls can automatically be diverted to the other office (callers won’t even notice). Employees in different offices, or those working at home, can reach each other with just a 3-digit extension.

“No Cost” Moves/Adds/Changes: Does it seem like even the smallest change to your current communications system requires a costly visit from a technician? If the answer is yes, it’s definitely time to make a change. Today’s new IP-based communications systems, such as Avaya IP Office solution, let you make moves, adds and changes without calling a technician and incurring any costs. That means if you add an employee or change the way calls are routed in your business, you can make the change yourself. The savings are significant and the flexibility is a real advantage.

Reducing Patient No Shows!

Posted on April 8, 2011 by inttelprod

Most small medical practices struggle with the problem of patient no-shows.  According to the Medical Group Management Association, the average no-show rate is 20%. Not only is this lost revenue, it has a ripple effect on care management. To compensate for patients missing their appointments, many practices overbook causing increased wait times, resulting in lower patient satisfaction. Avaya IP Office can help address the no-show problem by delivering automated patient reminders.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of using automated appointment reminder systems in reducing patient no shows.  Using Avaya IP Office eliminates a boring, tedious task; makes better use of staff time and saves money. Assuming that an average call takes 3 minutes, 50-75 reminder calls a day at $15-20 an hour quickly adds up to annual savings of thousands of dollars.

Avaya IP Office handles the job by linking directly to your patient database and managing all the communications automatically. You can also do the same thing for overdue payments and health or practice-related announcements.Learn other ways today’s IP-based communications solutions are helping to streamline healthcare delivery.  See the Avaya White Paper: Revolutionizing Patient Care Through Communications

Communications and Healthcare: Lower Overhead, Higher Care

Avaya to Help Small to Medium Sized businesses telecom productivity!

Posted: March 29, 2011 by inttelprod

New version of Avaya IP Office enhances user experiences for greater productivity; Makes UC up to 40% more affordable for companies with less than 20 employees.

MISSISSAUGA, ON. ITP “International Telephone Products Ltd” announced the arrival of IP Office 7; Avaya’s flagship communications solution for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Avaya IP Office 6.0 features new unified communications (UC) capabilities that deliver enhanced user experiences to employees in any location. These capabilities include advanced collaboration tools using voice, instant messaging, presence and video to drive a more productive and flexible workforce. Additionally, Avaya IP Office is now easier and more affordable for a key market segment - businesses with less than 20 employees - to install and use. This enables the smallest of companies to cost effectively implement the advanced communications and customer service functions of larger systems. With this new release, Avaya makes unified communications up to 40% more affordable for small businesses.

“With Avaya IP Office 6.0 in place, small businesses don’t have to sacrifice easy, intuitive operation in order to get the enhanced communications features of large enterprises,” said Anthony Bartolo, general manager, Small and Medium Enterprise Communications. “Our latest version provides SMEs with all of the next generation collaboration tools necessary for competing more effectively today against peers and larger competitors—and for thriving as the economy recovers.”

Improved collaboration tools, greater capacity to address SME challenges

Trends show that SMEs are optimistic about the future, yet seek new paths to business success. While most SMEs expect revenue growth in 2010, the majority (78%) also state that coming out of the recession, the old way of doing business won’t work and they need to find new ways of taking advantage of market opportunities. Avaya addresses this with advancements to its user-based SME solutions designed for teleworkers, mobile workers and office workers, including enhancements to Avaya one-X® Portal for IP Office—a desktop communications tool easily accessible via Web—and new video collaboration capabilities.

Avaya one-X Portal for IP Office lets users manage communications from a business office, home office or on the road via an easy-to-use Web browser-based interface (using a VPN and PC/phone combination). Today, the new release adds fully-integrated instant messaging with embedded voice calling and presence – boosting both the speed and responsiveness of inter-office communications among co-workers. Additionally, the audio conferencing feature, which allows up to 64 parties on a single call, now provides the ability to view, add, drop and mute attendees, as well as record conference calls.
Avaya IP Office 6.0 also introduces video collaboration through a new IP Office Video Softphone application. This offers voice control features via a virtual phone on a PC or laptop, supporting point-to-point video communications when visuals are required.

Other key Avaya IP Office improvements include doubling support capacity in a Multi-Site Network to 1,000 users. This enables SMEs in a wide-area network to extend the benefits of seamless communications, such as extension dialing and conferencing, to everyone across a business. Additionally, to keep essential communications running during an outage, Avaya IP Office enhances business continuity beyond telephony operation to now include voice messaging, auto attendant and other capabilities.

Bringing Cost-Effective UC to the “Less than 20" Market

According to IDC, an international provider of market intelligence for information technology, companies with less than 20 employees account for more than 90% of small businesses worldwide. Avaya IP Office is now affordably available to this segment through a new ‘combination card’ – providing just a single card for what used to require several cards to support digital, analog and IP devices. This, paired with a new line of phones for businesses with less than 20 employees, reduces costs without compromising capability.
“Now, the smallest businesses can gain access to the rich capabilities that were previously only available to larger companies,” said Tom Roles, president, NACR, an Avaya business partner. “And with IP Office 6.0, the savings in money and time are formidable. For example, a 90% price reduction in voicemail, combined with the new combination card, can make a real difference for companies with less than 20 employees. And we estimate that the programming, set-up and training time provided to this segment can now be cut by 50% – to just half a day. This makes it much easier for business partners to deploy.”

Are you and your office ready to go VOIP?

Posted: March 22, 2011 by inttelprod

Over the past 5 years we have seen a change in how business’s communicate. With the advancement of the Internet, a new technology has burst onto the platform, coined VOIP or Voice-Over Internet Protocol.

What the heck is that, and how can it help me?

In an increasing competitive marketplace businesses need to take every oppontunity to increase efficiencies and drive down costs. For the telecommunications industry, VOIP does this in a nutshell.

A huge cost for businesses are Long Distance (LD) charges. A traditional office has analog lines coming in and connecting to your phones, VOIP uses an ethernet cable (same cable that plugs into your PC) and connect them to your phones. Now voice communication is transimtted over an IP signal rather than a traditional means and thus LD costs are slashed.

ITP (International Telephone Products LTD.) recently solved a similar problem for one of our clients in the Mississauga Area. They had astronomical long distance costs. By them implementing an Avaya IP Office system their LD costs were cut in half. The savings was used to purchase the VOIP equipment at the same monthly cost they were paying before.
